In the Ultraleichtbausitz project, vehicle seat construction and design was reconsidered with a view to weight reduction. The result is a seat weight of 10kg, enabled by an innovative ‘xFK in 3D’ hybrid frame structure, which complements metal additive manufacturing. The secret of the diet? A lightweight philosophy of having the right material at exactly the right place, and only as much material as needed. Could this project influence future aircraft seating design?
