Icelandair has revealed the second generation of its business-class amenity kits, due to be available in autumn/winter 2024. The Icelandic airline first introduced amenity kits at the end of last year, and it has brought in amenities company, Skysupply, to design and develop two different concepts for the 2024 kits. The kits will again feature the work of Icelandic artist and designer Sara Riel, with her Flóran (‘The Flora’) botanical pattern applied as a theme of the outer design and contents.
The kit bags, available in two different shapes, are made of reusable Kraft paper, reflecting a key part of the airline brand’s sustainable message. The local design references also reflect the natural beauty of Iceland. Riel’s Flóran piece is a large-scale mural in Reykjavík that spans over three 8m-high walls. The mural was developed in 2019 in partnership with Reykjavík City and the multicultural elementary school Austurbæjarskóli, students from which were asked ‘If you were a plant, what plant would you be and why?’
Riel then collected the students’ diverse answers in form of a drawing and explanation, drew each selected species herself, and made three maps which serve as a floral key to the final artwork. These maps, shown in three different postcards with illustrations of Iceland’s vegetation, are included in the amenity kit as a gift from Sara Riel herself.
Two modified varieties of Flóran artwork have been used for the design of the new bags, whose base is grey Kraft paper. The art also decorates the banderole, the sleeping mask, and the packaging of the earplugs and toothbrush and toothpaste. The colours were adapted to Icelandair’s brand colours, which are mainly blue. The amenity kits also includes an Icelandair leaflet, Verso cosmetics (face moisturiser and lip balm), and socks.
The sustainability message is also delivered via the bamboo toothbrush (packaged in paper), the socks produced from recycled polyester, and the sleeping mask made of recycled TC.
