SmartSky Networks, a provider of 4G air-to-ground communication systems for in-flight connectivity using patented beamforming technology, has ceased business operations, effective 16th August 2024.
The North Carolina, USA-based company was founded in 2011, and by 2021, had completed all technical milestones for the broadband ATG network. In August 2022 the network went live in the Southeastern USA corridor before nationwide rollout, using the unlicenced 2.4GHz spectrum band, combining 4G and 5G technologies. The company claimed the network could provide 10-times the speed and capacity of some rival systems, while using 60 MHz of spectrum. It was not an easy progression though, with unresolved IP disputes and ultimately a lack of required financing leading to the closure of the business.
A statement on SmartSky Networks’ website reads: “SmartSky was founded with a bold vision: to revolutionize aviation communications. We successfully built and operated a leading, high-performance nationwide air-to-ground network using unlicensed spectrum, made possible by innovative patented technology. Along the way, our team dedicated great energy and expertise, earning several prestigious industry awards. While our products were groundbreaking and we were growing our market share, we ultimately could not secure the necessary financing to continue our mission.
“We hope that SmartSky’s achievements have inspired others to dream big, push boundaries, and pursue transformative ideas to reshape the future. Any inquiries should be directed to the following address – smartsky@vlpc.com”
Dr Joe Leader, CEO of APEX, commenting on LinkedIn about the announcement, said that he is: “Deeply saddened to see SmartSky Networks fold after working tirelessly to evolve in-flight connectivity in the United States. Competitive innovation drives our aviation industry and SmartSky played a crucial role in pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in air-to-ground in-flight connectivity. Their dedication to improving the passenger experience will be remembered and missed. Let’s continue to support their spirit of continuous innovation in our industry.”
