All Nippon Airways (ANA) has collaborated with Kikuchi Sheet Industries and Toppan Corporation to develop a fire-resistant storage bag that protects passengers, crew and aircraft from the risk of fires caused by overheated batteries in electronic devices.
The fire-resistant bags are already in use on board ANA aircraft, including aircraft operated by Air Japan and ANA Wings. ANA is not keeping this safety device to itself, as in January 2025 it is making the bags available for purchase by competing airlines and other commercial customers on the ANA Trading website.
The bag was developed in response to ANA cabin attendants suggesting that safe storage options should be made available in response to recent incidents on other airlines involving fire and smoke from deteriorating or poor-quality lithium-ion batteries. The fire-resistant bag was planned and developed in response to their feedback.
The storage bag is made from Kikuchi’s fire-resistant JIS A 1323 Class A approved felt sheet and an overseas-made heat-resistant sheet with fire-retardant certified aluminium. Thebag is combined with Toppan’s FSfilm product (a fire propagation suppressing film), which releases a fire-extinguishing aerosol in response to heat, to quickly and safely prevent fire risks from electronic equipment that shows signs of abnormal heat generation or deformation.
