The Tangerine design consultancy has collaborated with Sabeti Wain Aerospace, a manufacturer of aircraft seat covers, to create an innovative comfort system for premium economy and economy seating.
The system, named Slouch, is engineered to provide improved back support as a passenger reclines in their seat, cradling the body’s natural resting posture. The lower half of the seatback membrane is moved forward, reducing the need for passengers to slide themselves into a slouched position for comfort.
The project partners say this approach alleviates back strain, enhances relaxation, and allows for asymmetric, individual side adjustments – ideal for those who prefer sleeping on their side.
Slouch is designed for both line-fit and retrofit applications, meaning it can be integrated into existing premium economy and economy seats, or installed in new aircraft seats. Tangerine says that Slouch enables airlines to improve passenger comfort without requiring a full seat replacement, making it a cost-effective upgrade.
“Our working partnership with Sabeti Wain Aerospace has allowed us to bring this comfort innovation to life through their extensive expertise in high-quality seat covers. Together, we’re proving that true comfort isn’t just for premium cabins—it should be accessible to all travellers,” said Martin Darbyshire, chairman at Tangerine.
A prototype of the patent-pending Slouch system will be on display at Sabeti Wain Aerospace’s stand (7B45) at Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg (April 8–10).
