November 23, 2015: Desso has developed a special woven carpet for the new KLM Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. The Wilton carpet, developed in partnership with the design studio of Dutch designer Hella Jongerius, is made of 100% eco-friendly Norwegian wool.
Installed in both business and economy class, Desso says that the carpet meets the most stringent requirements in terms of fire safety, lifespan and comfort. It is delivered as a ‘ready-to-install’ product to help both Boeing and KLM save time during the maintenance processes of their fleet.

According to the partners, the Norwegian wool meets very high standards of material health, owing to the country’s focus on animal welfare and local farmers’ efforts to minimize or eradicate pollution from groundwater sources and insecticides and fertilizers. As a result, the wool meets tough Cradle to Cradle (C2C) environmental and human health standards without jeopardizing the technical requirements. Evaluated by C2C research company, EPEA Internationale Umweltforschung GmbH, the wool has been approved for categories: resource use and materials cycle, energy use, cultural and ecological diversity, chemical safety’ and animal welfare.
“Our vision is to be a market leader in producing environmentally responsible carpets that deliver outstanding value in design and functionality and thus contribute to people’s health and wellbeing,” said Roland Jonkhoff, managing director of Desso and VP for carpets at parent company, EMEA Tarkett.
