May 31, 2016 – Alitalia has unveiled new staff uniforms, designed and tailor-made by a team of nearly 500 people in Italy. The collection features fabrics made in Tuscany, silk made in Como, men’s uniforms tailored in Puglia, leather gloves from Naples, and shoes made in the Marche region. Created by Italian fashion designer Ettore Bilotta in Milan, the Alitalia Collection takes inspiration from the “golden days” of Italian fashion, the 1950s and 1960s, as well as Italy’s culture.
The uniforms will be gradually introduced system-wide from early July 2016 and worn by Alitalia’s 5,700 cabin crew and ground crews, including check-in and lounge staff. New uniform designs are underway for flight crew and operational staff.
“Our aim was to create a stylish collection that would represent Italian excellence around the world,” said Cramer Ball, CEO of Alitalia. “This is a country at the forefront of global style and design. The new uniforms complement the renaissance of the Alitalia brand and the rejuvenation of its aircraft fleet and products.”
“Working closely with Alitalia on every aspect of the design process was crucial,” said Bilotta. “This ensured the whole project was created, managed and completed in Italy by Italians, and to showcase the arts, culture, people, design and landscapes of this great country.”
For female cabin crew, a burgundy slowly changing to a lighter red was achieved using a chevron print design. For female ground crew, a charcoal gray changing to green was realized using the same print design. All women have three options – a one-piece dress, a two-piece jacket and skirt, and a trouser option.
The male uniform also uses the chevron design in dark charcoal grey and wood green. Double-breasted waistcoats will be worn by all male cabin crew, with male ground crew wearing the same color scheme in reverse. Male cabin crew will wear red ties, while male ground crew will wear green ones. The collection also includes wool crêpe overcoats in burgundy for female cabin crew, green for male cabin crew and female ground staff, and charcoal gray for male ground staff.
