In response to an increase in demand for premium travel from both business and leisure customers, following a suppressed period due to Covid-19, Lufthansa is temporarily reactivating five of its Airbus A340-600 aircraft on long-haul routes from Munich Airport, primarily to North American and Asian destinations. The aircraft have four travel classes, including a first class cabin with eight seats.
The A340s will restart operations in summer 2022 and this marks a good opportunity to try out the flight experience, as they are the last of Lufthansa’s A340-600 fleet, which consisted of 17 aircraft pre-pandemic, 12 of which are in the process of being sold, with the final five due to be sold after their temporary reactivation.
From summer 2023 the airline will begin phasing out the A340s as its five A350-900s join the fleet, taking their place. First class customers can still enjoy the Lufthansa first class experience on the A350s.
The A350s are just part of Lufthansa’s fleet renewal, with five Boeing 787-900s joining the fleet from 2021, and 107 Airbus A320neo aircraft being delivered between 2021 and 2027.
