Two graduates from the UK’s University of Salford have launched a business providing pre-recorded announcements and background music for commercial aircraft. The aim of the business, Nuntiare Media, is to offer an end-to-end production service providing scripting, translation, voice recording, technical processing and delivery, for tasks such as safety briefings and emergency messages, welcome greetings, duty-free sales offers and general passenger notifications, all offered in several languages.
Company co-founder David Bilsborough, who graduated from the university’s MSc Audio Production course in 2015, identified an opportunity in the market for the dedicated end-to-end production of pre-recorded announcements for airlines. He then set up Nuntiare Media with his business partner, Daniel Bottomley, a graduate of the university’s BSc Professional Sound & Video Technology course, shortly after the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Indeed pre-recorded announcements are proving important for flights during the Covid-19 pandemic, as they can be used to keep passengers informed and up to date with any relevant health and safety advice whilst onboard and with any regulations relating to the destination airport and country.
When production is complete, the output is then quality tested to ensure it complies with the relevant specifications set out by system manufacturers and industry bodies. Once the project is complete, the client receives the media, either digitally or in a physical media format, and the announcements can then be loaded to onboard reproduction systems and played in the cabin during flights.
Daniel Bottomley explained the inspiration behind the offer: “Following my studies at Salford I worked as a recording engineer for a period of time before searching for something more technically unique. I then started work at an aviation media content service provider, working in their legacy systems department with Daniel. In spring/summer 2020 that company reassessed its business structure and looked to move away from the area we operated in, so we formed Nuntiare Media and pitched to take this work, both from and in partnership with them, providing the opportunity to build this new company.”
Nuntiare Media, based in the Sharp Project in Manchester, was set up with a little advice and support from Launch @Salforduni, the University of Salford’s business incubator programme. The company has already worked with companies from the Middle East, Asia, America and Europe, with airlines including Etihad Airways, Tigerair Taiwan and Viva Aerobus.
