Global design and innovation company, Seymourpowell has developed a new seat layout system for train carriages, designed to offer advantages and improvements to current or pre-existing layouts. The principles of the layout may look more familiar to designers in the aviation sector, but this concept is worth reviewing.
The design has been developed with a particular focus on the business and premium travel segment of the high-speed, long-distance rail market. Whilst omni-directional and fold-over seats have existed for years, the increasing need to offer travellers the flexibility and choice of sitting with others in a sociable environment, or in the privacy of a separate zone, has not yet been implemented in the railway mass market.
