Two aircraft cabin interior companies, ACM Aircraft Cabin Modification and Elbe Flugzeugwerke (EFW), have been busy over the past 12 months, developing what they claim to be the largest flight crew rest compartment in a cargo aircraft. The rest area is of a modular structure and is intended for use by pilots on long-haul flights so they can stay within permitted working hours.
The compartment will be installed in a converted Airbus A330- 200 during the course of the year, with EFW converting the passenger aircraft into a cargo aircraft, and ACM taking responsibility for the entire cabin interior.
“The two companies have set themselves the objective of developing not only the largest and most comfortable flight crew rest compartment, but also one that is multi-purpose in its deployment,” stated ACM managing director, Roger Hohl.
The compartment will be installed directly behind the cockpit and can accommodate two people in bunk-style beds, with the upper bed able to be converted into a storage space with two nets. Comfort features include mattresses, sound-absorbing and light-impermeable curtains, and a protective mattress cover.
“The development of the new flight crew rest compartment took a total of 12 months due to its complexity. We are very satisfied with the outcome. The new product is not only modular, but also easy to install and remove,” added Hohl.
