Senior structural design engineer (direct hire)

Greater Portland area, Oregon

The Senior Structural Design Engineer will provide hands-on leadership in aircraft design engineering to develop FAA certification data and enhance design efforts for passenger-to-freighter conversions. The engineer will also produce the engineering design data required for the proper manufacture, assembly and installation of aircraft modifications; and research and review engineering data (drawings, reports, manuals, etc) defining aircraft structure or systems to determine the most efficient method of modification or alteration.

Responsibilities: 
• Support Director of Engineering with mechanical design engineering expertise
• Create structural designs, using CATIA, SolidWorks and/or AutoCad
• Analyze requirements for technology and personnel resources to plan and assess the feasibility of projects and designs and their projected schedules
• Communicate with various engineering teams including: stress, systems, certification and electrical engineers to ensure designs meet all requirements
• Prepare preliminary cost comparison trade studies and schedule studies that consider optional design approaches
• Establish key design review milestones. Lead Preliminary Design Review (PDR) and Critical Design Review (CDR) Meetings
• Prepare technical presentations that will be used for both design review meetings and business and certification applicationsAttend various design meetings
• Produce engineering design data required for the proper manufacture, assembly and installation of aircraft modifications
• Research and review engineering data (drawings, reports, manuals, etc.) defining aircraft structure or systems to determine the most efficient method of modification or alteration
• Develop preliminary engineering analysis necessary to determine a practical aircraft modification approach
• Mentor junior level and incoming design engineers
• Coordinate with stress engineers and Designated Engineering Representatives to ensure aircraft modifications or design deviations achieve applicable FAA certification in a timely manner.
• Oversee overall project design for new products
• Use knowledge of FAA regulations to ensure designs are compliant. Coordinate with certification team as necessary prior to drawing release
• Provide technical inputs regarding budget, procurement and scheduling for new design projects

Requirements:
• B.S. degree in Mechanical, Aerospace or Aeronautical Engineering
• 8+ years of prior aircraft design experience
• Proficiency in CATIA and/or SolidWorks, AutoCad
• Experience in STC design and large scale aircraft modifications
• Ability to produce designs and drawings with minimum supervision
• Ability to communicate effectually with FAA, DERs, internal engineering teams, and customers
• Previous experience with both Airbus and Boeing structural design
• Ability and willingness to travel, both foreign and domestic
• Must be able to pass a background check
• Previous leadership positions a plus
