Behold the 2020 Airbus A320!

June 19 2017 – Airbus customers which have opted for the Airspace cabin interior scheme on A330neo and A350 wide-body aircraft (DETAILS HERE) will be pleased to hear that they can now opt a more consistent experience across their Airbus fleet, with the 2020 introduction of the scheme on the narrow-body A320. This expansion of the Airspace product will give airlines the option of a common cabin design language across their fleet: especially since it is a line-fit and retrofit option.

These are the highlights of what Airspace will add to the A320:

• The largest overhead storage compartment in its class: The ‘Airspace Bins’ can accommodate eight bags per four-frame bin, and also accommodate larger and heavier bags stowed vertically

• Ceiling lighting: The customizable on-board ‘luminary experience’ begins at the entrance (pictured below) with a welcoming ambiance and continues throughout the aircraft with variable lighting features

• Harmonized door surround: The new lines of the frames match the Airspace design of the A350 XWB and the A330neo

• New sidewall panels with increased cabin width: ‘Space-Flex’ gives one more inch at shoulder level for extra personal space

• New lavatory design: The spacious design of the ‘Smart-Lav’ features colored mood lighting, along with anti-bacterial coatings, automatic aroma dispenser, sound and optional touchless options

• Colored LED lighting: With 16.4 million color options, the new custom cabin mood lighting creates a personalized in-flight experience throughout the cabin

• New window bezel: The new fully integrated window shades provide passengers more window space and unobstructed view, evoking the feel of the A350

“The A350 XWB cabin has proven extremely popular, with great feedback not only from passengers, but from design professionals,” commented Dr Kiran Rao, EVP of product strategy at Airbus Commercial Aircraft. “This was great validation that gave us confidence to apply the design language to the A330neo and now to the A320 family.”

According to Airbus, airlines expressed “great interest” in the A320 Airspace’s increased overhead storage when revealed to customers at Aircraft Interiors Expo in April. “The A320 offers airlines 40% more volume for their passengers’ bags, accommodating larger carry-on bag dimensions than competing single-aisle airliners,” said Ingo Wuggetzer, VP of cabin marketing at Airbus. “More overhead space means quicker boarding times, a value-add for passenger, and a better overall experience.”

Passengers will also appreciate the modular IFE platform with overhead video and in-seat audio/video on-demand, as well as the provision for in-seat power, wireless flexible connectivity and mobile telephony (GSM on board).
